ITHACA, N.Y. – James Madison took control early and returned to its winning ways Friday night with a 5-2 women's tennis victory at Cornell at the Reis Tennis Center.
The Dukes improved to 4-3 on the year, while the Big Red fell to 1-10. JMU moved to 7-0 all-time against Cornell, as Friday marked the program's first true road win in the history of the series.
The Dukes won two of three singles matches and four of six singles bouts, including three quick straight-set matches, to clinch the win. The final three singles outings all went to a third frame.
Kylie Moulin,
Daria Munteanu and
Daniela Voloh each went 2-0 on the night, while
Hope Moulin added in the clinching singles triumph.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- Cornell gained the early advantage with a 6-2 win on court three by Fatima El Ashram and Alexandra Savu over Daria Afanasyeva and Hope Moulin.
- JMU evened things up on court one, as Kylie Moulin and Ines Oliveira took down Emma Baker and Lauren Stein, 6-4.
- The Dukes clinched the doubles point and 1-0 match lead on court two when Munteanu and Voloh dispatch Gia Graziano and Lan Mi, 6-3.
Singles Play
- JMU used the doubles point as momentum in singles, as it quickly clinched the match victory with straight-set wins on courts four through six.
- Munteanu doubled the lead on court five, cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 win against El Ashram. It was her sixth straight singles win.
- Voloh won for the second straight match, dominating for a 6-1, 6-4 victory versus Savu on court four.
- Hope Moulin secured JMU's fourth win of the spring over on court six, fending off Graziano, 6-3, 6-4, as she moved to 2-0 in singles matches this spring.
- Kylie Moulin extended the lead to 5-0 on court one with a super-tiebreak win against Mi. After nearly closing it out in straight sets, Moulin was forced to go to a 10-point breaker in the third and held off Cornell's top player, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (5).
- Cornell got on the board with three-set wins on courts two and three. Stein rallied past Afanasyeva on court two, at 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (7), while Baker also came back for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against Oliveira.
MATCH FACTS
- Daniela Voloh won her 79th career singles match, which is third all-time at JMU and just seven shy of Emma Peterson (2015-19), who had 86 triumphs.
- Voloh also moved into third place at JMU with 140 combined victories and seventh in doubles wins, at 61.
- Kylie Moulin won her 61st singles bout Friday, moving her into a tie for ninth with Megan Douglass (2009-13).
- Moulin also rose into a tie for 10th with Ruxandra Andriescu (2010-14) with 117 combined wins.
- With her sixth straight win Friday, Daria Munteanu leads the Dukes with a 6-1 dual-match singles mark. She's followed closely by Voloh, who's 5-2.
