HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison's senior trio registered wins at the top three singles spots to lead the Dukes to a 4-1 Sun Belt Conference women's tennis victory against Southern Miss on Saturday afternoon at Hillside Courts.
The Dukes improved to 8-5 on the year and 4-0 in Sun Belt play, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in conference matches.
JMU won two of three doubles matches and claimed singles victories on courts one, two and three to move to 3-0 at home in 2023.
Daria Afanasyeva and
Daniela Voloh each went 2-0 on the afternoon, while
Kylie Moulin added a win at the top singles slot.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- USM took the early advantage on court one, as Alyssa Richter and Ebru Yazgan defeated Kylie Moulin and Ines Oliveira, 6-2.
- Shortly after, the team of Daria Munteanu and Voloh dispatched Suhana Das and Clara Tardivel, 6-2.
- Trailing early, Afanasyeva and Reka Matko rallied past Zenn Lim and Maddison Ricardo, 6-4, on court three to clinch the doubles point.
Singles Play
- Lim tied the match at 1-1 on court four, earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Oliveira.
- At the time of the first match's completion, Southern Miss was leading on three of the five remaining courts.
- The Dukes regained the lead, at 2-1, as Kylie Moulin beat Yazgan in straight sets with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph.
- Afanasyeva pulled away on court two, taking down Das by scores of 6-4, 6-2.
- On the final three courts, JMU rallied to win the second set at Nos. three, five and six, needing just one to fall the Dukes' way to secure the team win.
- Voloh was able to come through on court three, as she came back to defeat Tardivel, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, to clinch JMU's 13th straight win against a conference foe, dating back to the 2020-21 season.
- The final two bouts went unfinished with either JMU up or tied.
- Munteanu was just ahead of Ricardo on court five at 5-7, 6-3, 3-2, while Hope Moulin had just evened the score with Hannah Chambers, at 2-6, 6-4, 3-3.
Senior Trio All Rank Top 10 in Every Wins Category
- Following Saturday's win, the JMU senior class of Daniela Voloh, Kylie Moulin and Daria Afanasyeva all rank top-10 all-time at JMU in all three wins categories.
- In singles, Voloh moved past Jona Roka (2016-21) for second place with her 83rd victory. She is just three shy of Emma Peterson's (2015-19) record of 86.
- Moulin has 65 singles wins, ranking ninth, while Afanasyeva slid past Megan Douglass (2009-13) for 10th, at 62.
- In doubles, Afanasyeva is third with 74 wins, followed by Voloh's 67, good for a tie for fourth, and Moulin at 10th with 57. Voloh's win Saturday also tied her with Peterson in the doubles category.
- In combined victories, Voloh has 150 total wins (third), Afanasyeva has 136 (sixth) and Moulin rounds out the class with 122 (eighth).
