ROME, Ga. – The James Madison men's tennis duo of
Zach Fleishman and
Francisco Sinopoli went 1-1 at the ITA Conference Masters Championships (Nov. 7-8), winning their opening bout before dropping a close match in the round of 16 at the Rome Tennis Center.
Representing the Sun Belt Conference in doubles at the event, the JMU two opened the event Thursday afternoon with a thrilling 6-4, 7-5 victory against Tyler Nguyen and Mathis Tremblay of Saint Francis out of the Northeast Conference.
Fleishman and Sinopoli found themselves down 4-1 in the opening frame before breaking the SFU tandem three times and winning the final five games to grab the opening set. In the second they trailed 5-4 before breaking the SFU serve to square the set, sparking a 3-0 run en route to the win.
In Friday's round of 16, the Dukes bowed out of the tournament with a tight 6-4, 6-4 setback against Utah State's Mohammad Alkotop and David Martirosian out of the Mountain West Conference.
In the opening set, USU broke JMU's first game and teams held serve the rest of the way to give the Aggie duo the set lead. Fleishman and Sinopoli opened the second with a 2-0 lead, breaking Utah State's second-game serve. Up 3-2, Utah State would win three in a row to snag a 5-3 lead. After climbing within 5-4, Alkotop and Martirosian closed it out on serve to advance.
This event concludes fall play for both Fleishman and Sinopoli, who went 8-2 as a team over the past month.
The rest of the team wraps up fall play this weekend at the Navy Invite (Nov. 8-10) in Annapolis, Md.
