ANNAPOLIS, Md. – James Madison men's tennis wrapped up fall tournament play at the Navy Invite (Nov. 8-10), as the Dukes won a total of 11 matches at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
Highlighting JMU's play at the Navy Invite was
Aurelien Schmitt, who went 6-0 after going 3-0 in both singles and doubles. That included winning each singles bout in straight sets.
His doubles teammate,
Esteve Agusti, also claimed a 2-1 singles mark to finish the final weekend of the fall with a 5-1 ledger.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Friday
- Agusti and Schmitt teamed to roll past Binghamton's Ronin Lotlikar and Will Morais-Binnie for JMU's lone doubles victory.
- In singles play, Agusti took a close 7-5, 6-4 victory from Morais-Binnie. Schmitt followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Lotlikar.
- Harrison Lee rounded out day one with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Binghamton's Zubin Omar.
Saturday
- Teams played two rounds of doubles and one round of singles on day two of the event, with JMU splitting its doubles bouts.
- Agusti and Schmitt first cruised toa. 6-2 win versus LIU's Victor Sjostrom and Danila Ishchanka before dispatching Navy's Jeffrey Etterbeek and Aniketh Ayinala by a 6-4 margin.
- Markus Giersiepen and Lee also found the win column, earning a 6-4 victory against Bucknell's Oscar Bain and Nelson Alapi.
- On the singles side, Agusti rolled past Richmond's Dylan Atkinson, 6-0, 6-3, while Schmitt downed Navy's Steven Nguyen, 6-2, 6-2.
Sunday
- JMU managed two singles wins on the final day, as Schmitt capped off his perfect weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Bain of Bucknell.
- Giersiepen got in the singles victory column as well, taking down Bucknell's Felix Steindl by a 6-2, 6-2 score.
