HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison celebrated
Youssef Sadek and
Mario Pena on Saturday for Senior Day, but #50 Old Dominion used a pair of doubles wins and three straight-set singles victories to defeat the Dukes, 4-0, in Sun Belt Conference men's tennis action at Hillside Courts.
The Monarchs improved to 17-7 on the year and 7-1 in Sun Belt play while the Dukes dropped to 7-13 and 0-8.
ODU clinched no worse than a share of the SBC regular-season title, while JMU will be the No. 9 seed for next week's Sun Belt Championship in Rome, Ga.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- ODU gained the early lead with wins on courts two and three.
- The Monarchs gained the advantage with a 6-1 win on court three from Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Yanis Moundir against Edson Sanchez and Francisco Sinopoli.
- The team of Cosme Rolland De Ravel and Codie van Schalkwyk clinched the doubles point on court two, where they downed Markus Giersiepen and Sadek, 6-3.
- Esteve Agusti and Julian Lozano battled the top ODU tandem tough, as they led at multiple changeovers before it ended 3-4 with Jakob Cadonau and Connor van Schalkwyk.
Singles Play
- ODU claimed first sets on five of six courts, as Lozano battled Connor van Schalkwyk to a third set. Despite going unfinished, Lozano battled one of the league's top players tough, as it ended at 6-4, 4-6, 1-1.
- ODU took a 2-0 lead on court six, as Aryan Saleh upended Pena, 6-1, 6-2.
- The Monarchs extended the score to 3-0 on court five, as Mareschal-Hay ran away from Sinopoli for a 6-2, 6-3 win.
- The match concluded on court one, where Rolland De Ravel pulled away in the second set to defeat Sadek, 6-2, 6-2.
- ODU also held a set lead on both courts three and four when the bout wrapped up.

JMU will open postseason play on Thursday, April 18 at 10 a.m. from the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga. The Dukes' opponent will be determined Sunday following the conclusion of the regular season.
