HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison freshman
Zach Fleishman had a solid result in his first career match playing at the top singles spot, but Louisiana claimed the doubles point and won two of its three singles matches in three sets to down the Dukes, 4-1, on Saturday at the East Campus Tennis Courts.
Louisiana (10-10, 4-3 Sun Belt) used doubles wins on courts one and two and singles triumphs on courts two through four to clinch the win and move back above .500 in the Sun Belt Conference standings.
JMU (6-11, 0-6 Sun Belt) saw success on court three doubles where
Harrison Lee and
Francisco Sinopoli dominated Darius Balan and Mason Landreth for the fastest finish with a 6-2 win. That occurred before UL took a 6-2 win on court two and outlasted JMU on court one, at 6-4.
In singles play, Fleishman, who was elevated to court one for the first time at JMU, showed no sign of nerves as he quickly earned his best victory of the year, rolling to a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Oriol Fillat Gimenez.
Courts two and three were both pushed to third sets, but William Jade overcame match points to rally past Sinopoli on court two, at 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Court three saw
Edson Sanchez jump out to a set lead before William Ribero came back for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win.
The clinching point occurred on court four, as Samuel Kyjaci downed
Dennis Wiebe, 6-1, 6-3.
JMU closes the regular season on Sunday, April 13 when it hosts Southern Miss in a 10 a.m. start at Hillside Courts. It will be Senior Day for the Dukes, and Sanchez will be recognized 15 minutes prior to the opening serve.
