JMU Claims One Doubles Court, Battles Tough in Singles in Loss to #60 ODU

NORFOLK, Va. – James Madison men's tennis registered one doubles victory and neared a singles victory while taking a set off Old Dominion's top singles competitor, but the 60th-ranked Monarchs utilized a trio of straight-set singles victories to down the Dukes, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

ODU (12-8, 5-0 Sun Belt) used a break late in doubles play on court one to secure the doubles point and later turned in singles victories on courts three, four and five to remain unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play.

JMU (5-10, 0-5) etched a dominant win on court two in doubles play, as Zach Fleishman and Edson Sanchez defeated Adam Majchrzak and Jean-Karim Olivier De Sardan, 6-2.

In singles play, Esteve Agusti was within a game of defeating Majchrzak on court two, as he led 6-4, 5-4 when the match was abandoned. On court one Aurelien Schmitt took the opening set off of #123 Connor van Schalkwyk and their tight matchup went unfinished at 6-3, 2-6, 3-4. Sanchez also won a second-set tiebreak (7-2) from Thomas Nelson as their bout on court six was early in the third at 2-6, 7-6 (2), 0-2.

After producing a 6-2 win on court three in doubles play, the Monarchs clinched the point with a 6-4 win from van Schalkwyk and Yanis Moundir.

ODU stretched the lead to 3-0 with convincing victories by Olivier De Saran over Francisco Sinopoli on court four (6-1, 6-1) and Aryan Saleh over Dennis Wiebe on court five (6-1, 6-3).

The match would be clinched on court three where Moundir squeaked out the first set over Fleisham and pulled away in the second for a 7-5, 6-3 triumph.

JMU is back home next week for a three-match homestand to end the regular season, beginning with its non-conference finale on Tuesday, April 8 at 2 p.m.
