Steve Secord, a former team captain and most valuable player for the Dukes, was hired in 1992 and wrapped up his 33rd season as head coach in 2024-25.
Inhis 30th season at the helm, he reached a career win milestone, capturing this 300th win as JMU’s head coach. Following the 2024-25 campaign, he holds a career record of 333-356 (.483).
Over the course of his career, he’s guided JMU to 13 winning seasons and 16 finishing .500 or better. That included a 17-win season in 2018-19, which was the most wins for the Dukes in 36 years at that point.
The longest-tenured coach in program history, Secord was voted 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year, becoming the third JMU coach to hold the honor. He’s also guided JMU to 10 appearances in conference championship semifinals.
Since all-conference teams began in 1996 for the program, Secord’s teams have produced 51 all-conference selections, including 31 singles competitors and 20 doubles tandems. That was highlighted by Holden Koons becoming the program’s first CAA Player of the Year in 2022. Secord has also coached six standouts to CAA Rookie of the Year status.
Since joining the Sun Belt Conference, the Dukes have produced two All-Sun Belt singles competitors and one All-Sun Belt doubles team. In the first season in the league in 2022-23, Koons earned First Team singles status. The 2023-24 season saw Julian Lozano take home Second Team singles accolades, while he and Esteve Agusti were a Second Team doubles tandem.
During the 2021-22 season, Secord led JMU to a 14-6 overall record for its highest win percentage (.700) in 32 years. That included solid wins over in-state foes Radford and Richmond, as the Dukes started the spring season with a 6-0 mark. After a solid 29-10 record in which he advanced to the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships and finished undefeated against league opponents, Koons was voted CAA Player of the Year. The First Team All-CAA singles standout was also Second Team All-CAA doubles with Youssef Sadek in the program’s final season in the conference. For the first time since 2019, JMU finished in the top-10 of the Atlantic regional rankings, coming in at #8.
In 2020-21, the Dukes played just a spring season due to COVID-19, finishing 8-8 with its second straight trip to the CAA Championship semifinals. Koons was named CAA Co-Rookie of the Year and First Team All-CAA both for singles and doubles, sharing the honor with doubles partner Paul Mendoza.
The year prior, the Dukes’ season was cut short due to the pandemic, as they went 8-5. Following the shortened season, Koons became the program’s first Virginia Sports Information Directors Rookie of the Year and was also voted First Team All-State – also a first for the Dukes.
In 2018-19, JMU turned in its most wins in 36 years, finishing with a 17-8 record on its way to a berth in the CAA semifinals for the first time in a few years. Secord boasted a team that finished with a top-10 ranking in the Atlantic Region for the second straight year, finishing seventh in the regional rankings.
The 2017-18 season saw the Dukes go 16-7 overall. He coached Alvaro Arce to CAA Rookie of the Year accolades, marking the second straight JMU student-athlete to receive the award. The season prior, Damon Roberts took home the league’s top rookie award, as JMU went 14-9 as a team and four earned All-CAA honors.
Other CAA Rookie of the Year nods went to Robert Stirling in 2013, Jared Robinson in 2008 and Cullen de Windt in 1994.
JMU also notched winning records under Secord in 2011-12 (11-10), 2010-11 (12-8), 2009-10 (15-10), 2003-04 (11-9), 1998-99 (15-8), 1996-97 (13-10) and 1993-94 (12-10).
During the 2009-10 season, Mike Smith and Matt King ranked as high as 38th nationally by ITATennis.com. In 2002, he directed Andrew Lux and Troy Stone into the main draw finals at the National; Indoor Region II Championships.
Off the court, he coached Lux to back-to-back CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, as he became the first player in program history to take home the accolade. To date (as of 2022), he is one of just seven JMU student-athletes across all sports to win multiple Academic All-America awards.
Secord played for JMU from 1987-91 and helped lead the Dukes to the CAA title in 1989 and 1991 and second-place finishes in 1987 and 1990. He posted career records of 67-34 in singles and 63-34 in doubles competition and captured the No. 1 doubles title at the 1990 CAA Championship Tournament along with partner Marc Brix. During Secord’s tenure as a player, JMU amassed a 55-27 record in dual matches.
Secord, who received a degree in psychology from JMU in 1991, was a two-time Virginia High School League Group AAA state champion for Potomac High School in Dumfries.
Prior to his coaching career, Secord served as the tennis professional at the Valley Wellness Center in Harrisonburg, and he also has been an assistant pro both at Montclair Country Club in Dumfries and at the Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond.
