RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 20, 2008 -- The JMU men's tennis team got two wins from senior Jesse Tarr (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) and freshman Jared Robinson (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians) won his first career match as a Duke, to complete a 2-0 day in last weekend's VCU 4+1 Invitational.
The Dukes improved to 2-1 this season after falling to No. 31 VCU on Friday.
JMU won its first match of the day 3-2 in a hard fought battle against East Carolina. Tarr started off the day with a win over Henrique Viana 6-2, 7-6 (5) and Robinson defeated Brian Oakley 6-4, 6-1. The Pirates battled back and got wins from Henrik Skalmerud, over sophomore Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, Jaroslav Horvath, over junior Chris Armes (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) 6-0, 7-5, to tie the match at two apiece.
In the double match the Dukes sent junior Brian Rubenstein (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) and senior Carlin Campbell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) out to face Matt Peeler and Stephen Whitwell. Rubenstein and Campbell took the match 6-3, 6-4 to break the tie and give JMU the win.
In their second match of the day, Madison defeated Temple 3-0 with two matches suspended due to time constraints. The Dukes led in both those matches when the game was called.
Rubenstein and Campbell again teamed up, this time to defeat Lawrence Carpio and Zach Tobias, 6-1, 6-2. Tarr won his second match of the day, this time over Ricardo Valazquez 6-1, 6-2. Smith completed the win with his first win of the spring season, taking down Eduardo Saavedra, 7-6, 6-0.
