CHARLESTON, S.C., March 10, 2010 - The James Madison men's tennis team won its second match in as many days, picking up a 5-2 decision over The Citadel at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C. on Wednesday.
After snapping a three-match losing streak on Tuesday against Norfolk State, the Dukes have won two straight to even their record at 6-6. The Bulldogs' loss dropped them to 1-6 this season.
Madison dominated play early, sweeping doubles to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Ville Maaranen (Joensuu, Finland/Joenssun Lukio) and freshman Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual) set the tone with an 8-2 decision over David Orces and Josh Cook, before junior Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Kherson Technical School) teamed up with freshman Stephen Hardy (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) to clinch the point with an 8-2 win over Derek Dickey and Luis Morett.
Senior Mike Smith (Farifax Station, Va./Robinson) and junior Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson) completed the sweep with 8-4 win over Alberto Diaz and Yufo Sutantio. Smith and King snapped their personal three-match losing streak to improve to 15-6 in doubles play this year.
JMU won the first three matches of singles play to clinch the victory. Vladimirsky ran his record to 13-7 this year with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Diaz at no. 2 singles, while Smith improved to 12-11 with a win at no. 1. Voznenko sealed the victory, defeating Tripp Larking 6-2, 6-3 at no. 6.
Sophomore Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) won his third consecutive singles match and his seventh in the last nine to improve to 15-7 this year. He beat Josh Cook 6-5, 6-1 at no. 3.
The Dukes will conclude their spring break trip in Conway, S.C. on Friday as they take on Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m.
