NORFOLK, Va., March 7, 2010 - The James Madison men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to conference-foe Old Dominion in Norfolk on Sunday.
The Dukes lost their third straight match to drop to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while ODU improved to 13-6 and 1-2 respectively.
The Monarchs grabbed the early advantage, sweeping doubles play for a 1-0 lead. Yakov Diskin and Krzysztof Muzalewski set the tone in doubles, winning at no. 2 over junior Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Kherson Technical School) and freshman Stephen Hardy (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) 8-2. Albert Ochagavia and Tobias Fahoum secured the doubles point with an 8-5 win at No. 3.
The Monarchs continued to roll in singles play, winning five of the six matches. The Dukes' lone win came at No. 3 as sophomore Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin lukio) battled to a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Diskin. Nissinen has won five of his last seven singles matches to run his record to 13-7 this season.
Senior Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) forced Tobias Fanselow into a third set but ran out of gas, losing 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at no. 1.
JMU stays in Norfolk to take on Norfolk State at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March, 9 before heading to South Carolina for a pair matches. Madison takes on The Citadel on 9 a.m. on Wednesday in Charleston, S.C. before heading to Conway, S.C. for a match against Coastal Carolina on Friday.
