NORFOLK, Va., March 9, 2010 - The James Madison men's tennis team snapped its three-match losing streak with a 6-1 win over Norfolk State at the NSU Tennis Complex in Norfolk, Va. on Tuesday.
The Dukes improved to 5-6 overall and 5-2 outside of the CAA. NSU dropped to 2-8 with the loss.
JMU took the early 1-0 lead with a 2-1 win in doubles play. The team's split the first and third matches before sophomore Ville Maaranen (Joensuu, Finland/Joensuun Lukio) and freshman Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Gables, Fla./Broward Virtual) clinched the point with an 8-3 win at No. 2.
The Dukes continued to roll in singles play, taking five of the six matches. Junior Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Kherson Technical School) set the tone with a 6-0, 6-1 over Dexter McDowell, while sophomore Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) and freshman Stephen Hardy (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) picked up 6-0, 6-2 wins at nos. 3 and 4 respectively.
Vladimirsky extended the Madison lead to 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ben Marks at no. 2 before Arsenio Culver broke up the shutout with a 6-2, 6-3 win over senior Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson).
Sophomore Jovan Milic (New Belgrade, Serbia/Belgrade Sports School) picked up the win at no. 6 by default.
JMU returns to the court on Wednesday in Charleston, S.C. when it takes on The Citadel at 9 a.m.
