GREENVILLE, N.C., February 25, 2012 - The James Madison men's tennis team defeated Christopher Newport 7-0 Saturday in Greenville, N.C. The Dukes improved to 2-2 overall while the Captains fell to 0-2.
Doubles play started with the Dukes' Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual) and Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France/Aux Lazaristes Minimes/Wayne State) taking on the fourth-ranked Division III doubles team in the nation of Matthew King and Eric Shulman. CNU had an opportunity to set the tone for the match, defeating the Dukes' team 8-4.
However, JMU bounced back, sweeping the remaining matches and taking the win. Madison's rally started when Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia/Braemar/UT-Chattanooga) and Florent Sentenac (Borderes, France/Lycee Theophile Gautier/Auburn Montgomery) defeated CNU's Gian Heyer and Thomas Whaling, 8-2 in No. 2 doubles. Hugo Ramadier (Rome, Italy/Lycee Francais Chateabriand/ Northern Arizona) and Jovan Milic (Belgrade, Serbia/Belgrade Sports School) followed suit in No.3 doubles, topping the Captains' Kyle Tobin and Robbie Wagner 8-4 and clinching the doubles point.
In singles play, Vladimirsky recovered from his doubles defeat to overcome Shulman in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. Ryan Pool followed by downing Heyer, 6-2, 7-6(4) to give the Dukes a 3-0 advantage in the match.
JMU clinched the win after Ramadier took down CNU's King in No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
With the match in the bag, the Dukes didn't let up. Moulin took down Tobin, 7-5, 6-3 and Sentanac toppled Joey Manilla in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Bastien Russo (Lyon, France/Notre Dame des Minimes/Shorter) completed the JMU sweep in the closest-played match of the day, defeating Christopher Newport's Wagner in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 10-2.
The Dukes are back in action tomorrow, taking on the East Carolina Pirates at 11 a.m. in Greenville, N.C.
