WILLIAMSBURG, Va., March 23, 2014 – The James Madison men's tennis team was dealt a 6-1 defeat by William and Mary in a Colonial Athletic Association match Sunday morning at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
The Dukes fell to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Tribe added a win over Hampton on Sunday and improved to 12-7 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Sophomore Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) notched the lone win for JMU, beating Ben Guthrie at No. 2 singles. Stirling dropped the first set 6-3, but was winning the second set 5-2 before Guthrie retired.
Sophomore Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) had a tough loss in a match that could have gone either way at No. 4 singles. He was edged 7-6 in both sets. He also teamed with freshman Sebastian Salinas (Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) in a very competitive match at No. 3 doubles. The pair lost 8-6 to John Banks and Ben Hoogland.
After 12 straight matches away from its home courts, JMU will play at home for the first time this season when it hosts conference foe Drexel on Tuesday. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the UREC Tennis Courts at University Park.
