WILMINGTON, N.C. – James Madison men's tennis closed its opening weekend of fall tournament play in winning fashion, going 7-0 and claiming the doubles flight title at the Jersey Mike's UNCW Invitational at Porters Neck Country Club.
Junior
Holden Koons and
William Karpinski capped off a stellar weekend of doubles, taking down Youngstown State's Erik Gran and Harry Fouzas by a score of 6-2. The Dukes produced a 6-2 doubles win from sophomore
Mario Pena and freshman
Mathieu Josserand, as they upended UNCW's Ignacio Sandoval and John Dransfeld, 6-2, in the consolation final.
JMU also claimed five singles victories to round out its first fall event of the 2021-22 season.
Sophomore
Oscar Hernandez took third place in Flight A, as he beat UNCW's Trey Mallory by scores of 6-2, 6-1. Koons won the consolation final match in Flight A with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against ETSU's Juan Jose Vargas, and Josserand held off ETSU's Jason Lee, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to win his consolation final in Flight B.
The Dukes also picked up come-from-behind singles wins by freshman
Youssef Sadek and Pena over a pair of UNCG players. Sadek rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 win against Roger Rogowski, while Pena came back to beat David Flisberg, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
