LYNCHBURG, Va. – James Madison overcame an early deficit but fell in the decisive match to drop a tough 4-3 decision to Missouri on Wednesday evening at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
The Tigers evened their record to 5-5 on the year, while the Dukes fell to 4-6.
Missouri opened the match with a pair of doubles victories to claim the early 1-0 lead.
Gabriela Martinez and Ellie Wright defeated the sister tandem of
Kylie Moulin and
Hope Moulin, 6-1, on court two, while Elys Ventura and Valentina Vazquez downed
Natalia Nikolopoulou and
Amanda Nord by a score of 6-2 on court three to capture the doubles point.
JMU's
Daniela Voloh and
Michelle Los Arcos also led Emelie Schwarte and Bronte Murgett, 5-3, when the match was abandoned due to Mizzou clinching doubles.
In singles play, Nord evened the score, at 1-1, when she rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Vazquez on court five.
The Dukes grabbed a brief 2-1 lead with a win on court four, as
Hope Moulin dispatched Martinez by scores of 6-4, 6-0.
Missouri answered back with consecutive wins on courts one and three. Murgett claimed a 7-5, 6-4 decision from Nikolopoulou, while Schwarte slid past Voloh, 6-4, 6-4 to give the lead back to Mizzou.
Kylie Moulin tied the match once again, at three-all with her three-set victory against Wright. She won her court-two bout by the count of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
On court six in the deciding match Los Arcos took the first set but couldn't close the match out against Ventura, falling 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-1 to give the Tigers the 4-3 triumph.
