CINCINNATI, Ohio – James Madison suffered its second straight setback in heartbreaking fashion, dropping a 4-3 decision at Xavier on Sunday afternoon at the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Center.
The Musketeers evened their record to 4-4 on the season, while the Dukes fell to 3-3 in 2023.
Xavier won two of three doubles matches and the teams split in singles play, with XU winning on courts one through three and JMU taking bouts on courts four through six.
JMU was led by
Daria Munteanu and
Daniela Voloh, who were the lone Dukes to go 2-0 on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- Xavier claimed wins on courts one and three to grab the early 1-0 match lead.
- JMU took the early advantage in doubles though, as Munteanu and Voloh took down Imani Graham and Anna Roggenburk, 6-2, on court two.
- The Musketeers evened things up on court three, with Blessing Nwaozuzu and Abigail Siminski holding off Daria Afanasyeva and Hope Moulin by a score of 6-4.
- The hosts secured the doubles point on court one where Kat Lyman and Abby Nugent defeated Kylie Moulin and Ines Oliveira, 6-3.
Singles Play
- Xavier doubled its lead with a win on court three, as Nugent claimed an upset victory against #125 Oliveira, 6-4, 6-1.
- JMU got on the board by virtue of Voloh on court four, as she produced the most lopsided win of the day in a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Roggenburk.
- The Musketeers went up 3-1 on court two, as Lyman upended Afanasyeva, 7-5, 6-2.
- The final three matches all went to three sets, and JMU made it 3-2 when Munteanu dominated the third en route to a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 win over Siminski on court five.
- Xavier clinched the match on court one, as Graham rallied past Kylie Moulin, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
- On court six, Hope Moulin registered her first singles dual win of the season, rallying for a thrilling 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) triumph against Abigail Flowers.
MATCH NOTES
- With her doubles win, Voloh moved into a tie for seventh at JMU with 60 career doubles victories. She's now tied with former Duke Michelle Nguyen (2009-13).
- Voloh also capped off the day with her 78th career singles triumph, rising to third all-time at JMU. She surpassed Jacqueline Palmucci (2010-14), who had 77.
- In the teams' second meeting ever, Xavier has evened the series at 1-1. JMU won the inaugural matchup, 5-1, back on March 7, 2018 in Orlando, Fla.
