BOONE, N.C. – James Madison and App State went to the wire in Saturday's Sun Belt Conference women's tennis match, but the Dukes won two of the final three singles bouts to earn a 4-3 victory at the Deer Valley Racquet Club.
The Dukes improved to 7-5 on the year and 3-0 in Sun Belt play, while the Mountaineers fell to 5-5 and 2-1.
JMU won two doubles matches and the squads split singles with three victories apiece for the final margin.
Daniela Voloh went 2-0 with wins in both singles and doubles, while
Hope Moulin and
Kylie Moulin also added singles triumphs. Hope's victory was the clincher for the Dukes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU won on courts three and two to take the early 1-0 match lead.
- The Dukes had a dominant performance on court three, where Daria Afanasyeva and Reka Matko took a 6-1 win from Maggie Pate and Virginia Poggi.
- In a back-and-forth match on court two, Daria Munteanu and Voloh outlasted Erika Dodridge and Helena Jansen, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point.
- In similar fashion from Thursday's match at VCU, the No. 1 doubles team of Kylie Moulin and Ines Oliveira led 6-5 versus Savannah Dada-Marshall and Ellie Murphy when the bout went unfinished.
Singles Play
- JMU doubled its lead to 2-0 on court one, as Kylie Moulin won in straight sets against Jansen, at 6-4, 6-2.
- App State answered with a pair of three-set victories, one in comeback fashion.
- Maggie Pate was able to slip past Oliveira in a tiebreak on court three, getting the Mountaineers on the board with a tight 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (3) win.
- On court two, App State squared the match, as Dada-Mascoll rallied past Afanasyeva, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
- Voloh gave the lead back to JMU, at 3-2, with her straight-set triumph over Poggi, as she took a 6-3, 6-4 win on court four.
- Hope Moulin clinched the victory for the Dukes on court six, as she didn't concede a single game in the third to beat Murphy, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0.
- In the final bout of the day, Munteanu rallied from a large deficit in the second set, but Dodridge was able to win the final three games of the third to earn a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win on court five.
MATCH NOTES
- JMU improved to 4-0 all-time against App State, as Saturday marked the teams' first meeting since 2012. It was also the first non-neutral match in the history of the series.
- Daniela Voloh tied Jona Roka (2016-21) for second place all-time at JMU with 82 career singles victories.
- Saturday was the second career clinching point for Hope Moulin, as she also did so on March 4, 2022, versus Marshall.
