HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison women's tennis turned in its second straight clean sheet, cruising past Arkansas State, 7-0, in Sun Belt Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Hillside Courts.
The Dukes moved to 11-5 on the year and stayed unbeaten in Sun Belt play, at 7-0, while the Red Wolves dropped to 1-11 overall and 0-6 in SBC matches.
JMU won two doubles matches and claimed straight-set victories on every singles court.
Daniela Voloh highlighted play by tying the program record with her 86th career singles win, matching Emma Peterson (2015-19).
Aside from Voloh,
Daria Afanasyeva also went 2-0 on the day, while the group of
Kylie Moulin,
Ines Oliveira,
Alexandra Prudente and
Hayley Glen notched singles triumphs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU never trailed on any court to grab the early 1-0 lead, producing 6-1 victories on courts two and three.
- The first doubles win came on court three, where Afanasyeva and Reka Matko defeated Anna Borovinskaya and Abigail Thurmer.
- Moments later on court two, Daria Munteanu and Voloh beat Rebecca Brody and Yasmine Humbert.
- Court one went unfinished, as Moulin and Oliveira held a 5-3 lead on Sarah Millard and Sofia Vdovychenko.
Singles Play
- Voloh tied the JMU singles record rather quickly, turning in her second straight 6-0, 6-0 triumph, as she earned the win against Thurmer on court three.
- Afanasyeva followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Brody on court two, and Moulin clinched the match on court one with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Millard.
- Making her first career appearance in the lineup, Glen took control early and dispatched Borovinskaya by scores of 6-2, 6-2 on court six to extend the lead.
- Oliveira won her second straight singles match on court four, taking down Vdovychenko, 6-2, 7-5.
- Prudente, also playing for the first time in singles this spring, rallied in the second set to defeat Humbert, 6-1, 7-6 (2), on court five.
MATCH NOTES
- Sunday's win was the 13th consecutive conference victory for the Dukes, and they have now won 16 in a row versus league foes when accounting for postseason play.
- In addition to her singles feat, Daniela Voloh also moved past Peterson for second place all-time at JMU with 155 career combined victories. She's just 10 shy of Jona Roka's record of 165, set back in 2021.
- Kylie Moulin and Voloh have each won five straight singles matches, while Afanasyeva has won four in a row.
- On the doubles side, Voloh and Daria Munteanu have won 10 straight matches, moving to 12-2 at the No. 2 doubles spot.
- JMU and Old Dominion are the only two Sun Belt teams without a conference setback, and the two will meet up next weekend for sole possession of first place.
