Dukes Fall in League Opener to Georgia State

ROME, Ga. – James Madison battled tough in singles play but Georgia State used a narrow win in doubles and three straight-set singles victories to down the Dukes, 4-0, on Sunday in Sun Belt Conference men's tennis action at the Rome Tennis Center.

The match was relocated from Atlanta to Rome due to weather conditions in the Southeast. GSU (4-7, 1-1 Sun Belt) used wins on court one (6-3) and court three (6-4) to snag the doubles point and early 1-0.

JMU (5-5, 0-1 Sun Belt) got its lone win of the day at No. 2 doubles, as Edson Sanchez and Aurelien Schmitt, as the duo took down McKane Johnson and Ethan Vander Auwera, 6-3, in what would be the first finish in doubles play.

In singles, GSU earned victories on courts one, two and four to clinch the match.

The Panthers doubles their lead to 2-0 on court two, as Edward Tymes didn't concede a game to Esteve Agusti for his 6-0, 6-0 win. On court one, Baran Soyler moved the lead to 3-0 for GSU, as he downed Schmitt, 6-4, 6-2.

The clinching point came on court four, where Gabriele Datei defeated Sanchez, 6-2, 6-1.

JMU was highly competitive in the other three unfinished matches, as Dennis Wiebe led Brian Capalnean on court five (6-2, 6-6 unfinished). Over on court six, Harrison Lee had evened the score with Johnson, winning the second set (4-6, 6-3 unfinished). The other bout, on court three had Aryan Jit Singh narrowly ahead of Zach Fleishman (7-6 (4), 2-3).

JMU is back on the courts on Monday, March 17 when it heads to Macon, Ga., to take on Mercer at 2 p.m.
