JMU Drops Monday Bout at Mercer

MACON, Ga. – Mercer won a pair of matches and claimed a trio of singles courts to down James Madison, 4-0, in men's tennis non-conference action on Monday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.

Mercer (5-6) turned in a pair of 6-2 doubles victories on courts one and two to earn the doubles point and early 1-0 lead. On court three, Harrison Lee and Dennis Wiebe were in a tight bout with Howell Burns and Esteban Gasser, knotted at 4-4, when it went unfinished.

On the singles side, the Bears doubled the lead on court five, where Marceau Fouilhoux defeated Edson Sanchez, 5-3 retired.

Shortly after, Tom Hagelauer downed Wiebe, 6-0, 6-1, on court four to extend the lead to 3-0. Needing just one more point and with three matches all close, the fourth went the way of Mercer, as Isak Padio took down Zach Fleishman, 6-1, 6-2, on court two to clinch the win.

In the three unfinished singles matches, JMU (5-6) led on one court, was even in the third set in another and the final was early in the second set after a tight first.

Lee was up a set on Burns on court six (6-1, 1-4 UF), while Esteve Agusti was all square with Prince Gandonou on court three (6-0, 2-6, 1-1 UF). Court one also saw Nemanja Stefanovic narrowly leading Aurelien Schmitt (7-5, 0-1 UF).

JMU returns home and to Sun Belt Conference play on Friday, March 21 when it hosts Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. from Hillside Courts.
