NEW ORLEANS – James Madison junior
Daria Munteanu was selected as the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week following her performance in JMU's victory in the non-conference finale.
Â
This is the first career weekly award for Munteanu, who went 2-0 to help lead the Dukes to a 4-0 win at VCU on March 1.
Â
She needed just one set to earn a win at No. 1 singles, defeating Tania Andrade Sabando, 6-2 retired, to give JMU a 2-0 match lead. Munteanu also teamed with
Hope Moulin for a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point.
Â
The win for JMU was its first over JMU since 1997, ending a 16-match skid with the Rams. It was also the first time since 1981 that JMU held VCU without a scoring point.
Â
JMU is back in action on Friday, March 7 as it opens Sun Belt play against Marshall at 2 p.m. from Hillside Courts.
