HARRISONBURG, Va – James Madison kicked off Sun Belt Conference women's tennis play in style, using crucial runs late to down 50th-ranked Marshall, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at Hillside Courts.
JMU (3-8, 1-0 SBC) won the doubles point by taking the top two courts and was victorious on singles courts two, three and four to open conference play on a winning note. It also avenged last season's 6-1 loss at Marshall (11-2, 0-1 SBC).
The win is JMU's second straight and its first victory against a ranked opponent since March 5, 2022, when the Dukes beat #62 Michigan State, 4-1. The loss snapped Marshall's four-match win streak.
A trio of Dukes went 2-0 on the day, as
Ines Oliveria and
Sophie Williams teamed for the doubles-clinching win and captured the final two singles wins to close out the 4-1 victory.
Elena Kraleva also won in both doubles and singles, as she teamed with
Mia Saveljic for the quickest doubles finish.
The Dukes opened the day with a 6-2 win for Kraleva and Saveljic on court two doubles over Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane. Shortly after, Oliveira and Williams, who rank 51st in the latest ITA doubles rankings, downed Alina Mokrynskaya and Emma Vanderheyden, 6-3, on court one to secure a 1-0 match lead.
In singles play, Kraleva took over late in the first set and never looked back in her 7-5, 6-2 victory versus Vanderheyden on court two to double JU's lead.
Elsewhere in singles, four of five would go to a third set with the one other match finishing with a second-set tiebreaker.
Marshall got on the board on court six, a McGrane overcame a set deficit and held off
Hope Moulin for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 triumph.
Oliveira pushed JMU's lead to 3-1 in thrilling fashion on court four. After dropping the first set, she was within a game in the second set of falling in straight sets to Hurrion before breaking the Marshall serve twice to force a third set. Oliveira rattled off nine straight games to storm back for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 win.
Williams clinched the match for JMU, using a crucial comeback in a second-set tiebreak to earn her win. Down 6-4 to Mokrynskaya in the breaker, she staved off two set points and won the final four points to win the bout, at 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) and clinch the match.
Two other matches went unfinished, but it featured a pair of JMU players leading in third sets.
Daria Munteanu, the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, had rallied to take the lead on Johanna Strom, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 3-0. Strom was a 2024 First Team All-Sun Belt singles and doubles competitor. Saveljic was also nearing the conclusion of her match, as she had battled back to take the lead over Nour El Ouazzani, 6-4, 4-6, 5-4, on court five.
JMU is back in action on Sunday, March 9 when it hosts App State at 10 a.m. from Hillside Courts.
