Daria Munteanu registered a victory against a previously-unbeaten No. 1 singles player, but Maryland claimed three of their five singles wins in three sets to upend the Dukes, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Junior Tennis Champions Center.
The Terrapins (7-0) remained unbeaten after claiming courts two through six, which included straight set triumphs on courts four and six. The Dukes (3-5) held leads late on two doubles courts before Maryland rallied for the 1-0 lead, and also played into third sets on courts two, three and five.
JMU's day was highlighted by Munteanu's court-one singles victory against Oliwia Orlinska, who had yet to drop a singles match this spring. She took the top court by scores of 6-3, 7-5, which included a rally to claim the second set.
After gaining the lead with doubles victories on courts two and three, Maryland doubled its lead on court six, as Ema Kovacevic downed
Anna Kantor, 6-1, 6-1. The Terps clinched the match by holding off the Dukes in third sets on courts two and three, with Emma Ghirardato beating
Mia Saveljic, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, and Magdalena Baniak fending off
Brooklyn Hoffmann, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Munteanu got JMU on the board with her victory on court one before the Terrapins closed the match by taking courts five and six. Diya Challa defeated
Sophie Williams, 7-5, 5-2 retired, while Lucia Donnelly rallied past
Ariel Avidan, at 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
JMU stays out on the road to face Penn State on Friday, Feb. 20. The match is set for a 4 p.m. start at PSU's Indoor Tennis Center.
