Cason Burk, a seasoned coach with over 10 years of Division I coaching experience, was hired as an assistant coach at James Madison in April 2024 and will enter his second season on JMU's staff in 2025-26.
In his first season with the Dukes, Burk played an instrumental role in JMU's 20-win season which culminated in a share of the Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship. Under his tutelage, Mark Freeman and Bryce Lindsay were named First and Third Team All-Conference, respectively. Freeman became the third JMU player to tally three 30-point games in the same season since 2004, while Lindsay broke Kent Culuko's JMU freshman record for made 3-pointers (80), while leading the conference in 3-point percentage (40.8).
Burk spent the previous two seasons at Morehead State, helping the Eagles post a 48-21 record during that span. Burk helped mentor Mark Freeman, who earned OVC Player of the Year, as well as OVC Defensive Player of the Year Alex Gross.
Prior to his time at MSU, Burk spent the previous 10 seasons at his alma mater, Jackson State, where he helped the Tigers win the SWAC regular season title in 2020-21. He was named one of the conference's top assistants following that campaign by Stadium Insider. While with the Tigers, Burk coached Tristan Jarrett to SWAC Player of the Year (2020-21) and Jayveous McKinnis to an impressive three straight SWAC Defensive Player of the Year awards (2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22). He helped JSU to the 2020-21 SWAC regular-season title with an 11-0 conference record.
Burk played for Jackson State from 2008-11, helping lead the Jaguars to a 17-1 SWAC record and league title in 2010 while also leading the league in rebounding.
The native of Jackson, Miss., attended Provine High School, where he earned class Salutatorian. Burk earned his Bachelor's Degree from JSU in 2010 and completed his Master's Degree there in 2012.
