HARRISONBURG, Va., March 14, 2007 ? The James Madison University men's tennis team swept doubles play as that point made the difference in earning a 4-3 victory over Richmond in the first home competition for the Dukes.
Jesse Tarr (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) and Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) defeated Chris Louis and David Berry 8-2 while Carlin Campbell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Brian Clay (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) also defeated their opponents Doug Banker and Mike Sommer 8-2. John Snead (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) and Brian Rubenstein (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Bobby McNally and Will Minter.
On the singles side, JMU split with Richmond 3-3.
Tarr defeated Louis 6-2, 6-2 in the first seed match-up.
Snead picked up a victory over McNally after McNally retired due to injury when the score was 6-4, 3-0.
Smith rounded out the victories on the singles side with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sami Belikhlef.
The Dukes next will be at home against Mary Washington on March 20. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
