Spring 2008 JMU President's List... three shots and an assist in the season opener against Georgetown... one of four JMU players to score off of penalty strokes in the overtime match against Penn State... three goals this season... one assist in Georgetown and ODU matches... two assists in the Richmond match... finished her career with 11 goals and 11 assists... started in 82 of the 86 games played
As a junior: Started all 23 matches... tied for fifth on the team with five goals... most of her goals came as one of JMU’s top shooters on penalty corners... first goal in win over St. Joseph’s... had three-match scoring streak against Maryland, American, and Radford... scored in JMU’s hard-fought 3-2 setback against Virginia.
As a sophomore: Started in all 20 games played... scored JMU's only goal unassisted in the match against #5 American University... had two assists during the season in the overtime match against Michigan State and the 4-0 shutout against Va. Commonwealth
As a freshman:CAA All-Rookie team. two goals, five assists and third on team in points in her debut season... started 12 of 16 games... first career goal was unassisted in American match... first career assist in 3-0 win over Radford... had a goal and an assist in 2-0 shutout over Hofstra.
High school: Four-year starter who had career totals of 43 goals and 67 assists. All-Wyoming Valley Conference Division I Coaches first team three years and honorable mention as a freshman. All-state AAA first team two years and honorable mention as a sophomore. Also conference all-scholastic first team three years. The Spartans were 2003 state AAA champions, 2002 state quarterfinalists and 2001 first-round state tournament participants. Wyoming Valley West was District 2 champion 2001-03 and Wyoming Valley Conference champion 2000 and 2003. The Spartans compiled a 71-10-1 record during her four years on the team. Played for Pocono team in Keystone State Games four years (silver medals in summer 2000 and 2001 and bronze medals in summer 2002 and 2003 and winter 2003) and in AAU Junior Olympics one year. Participated in the U.S Field Hockey Association's National Futures and Futures Elite programs four years. Competed in National Hockey Festival three years (2001-03), and her team won the under-16 gold medal in 2001. Also competed in the national indoor tournament 2003 and 2004 and in the 2001 AAU Junior Olympics, where her team won the silver medal. Also competed in track and placed fifth in the state in the javelin (135’10”) as a senior and was district 2 javelin runner-up as a sophomore, junior and senior. Wyoming Valley all-conference first team in track as a senior.
Personal: Lauren Marie Stefaniak. Interdisciplinary liberal studies (special education) major. Her younger sister, Melissa, is a junior on the JMU field hockey team.
Getting to know Lauren...
Why did you choose JMU? I have always wanted to go to JMU and play field hockey. The campus is great and I knew I would get a great four years here.
What is your major and why did you choose it? Education with special education. I love helping others and I think a career in special education will be an amazing experience.
What do you enjoy most about JMU field hockey? The CAA Championship.
What are your goals for this year? Our goals are to be ranked in the top 10, to win CAA’s again, and make it to the Final Four.
Who is the silliest/goofiest person on the team? Jessie Dawson
Who motivates you and why? I motivate myself and my teammates always push me to try my hardest.
What are your favorite things about JMU? I love the campus and the team.
What is your favorite place at JMU? Q'doba.
What influenced you to play field hockey? I’ve always wanted to play. It’s so fun.
Which is your favorite team to play against? ODU. We get so intense and excited and they're really great competition.
What can’t you live without? My parents. They are everything to me.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I am afraid of the dark.
What other hobbies and/or activities do you enjoy? I like to read, shop, sleep, watch movies, and eat.
